Head and Neck Cancer: advances in radiation treatment

The Geological Society, London 30th April 2010
Final Programme

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common malignancy reported worldwide, with over 5000 cases presenting in the UK annually. The disease is often challenging to treat as most patients present with advanced disease and suffer from other co-morbidities. In addition the close proximity of the tumour to organs and tissues at risk of damage from radiation is problematic.

The introduction of advanced radiotherapy techniques such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy and more recently volumetric arc therapy has improved the ability to preserve organs and improve the patient's quality of life. At the same time developments in chemotherapy agents often in combination with radiotherapy has led to dose intensification with improved survival for patients with head & neck cancer.

This multi-disciplinary meeting provides the opportunity to discuss recent developments in UK practice as well as future directions for the treatment of head & neck cancer.

Scientific posters will also be on display - see Final Programme above for list of poster presentations.
