Which Membership Category is appropriate for you?

This page summarises the profile expected of candidates for each category of IPEM membership.  The precise requirements for admission to each category of membership, as set out in the Institute's Rules, can be seen by following the "more >>" link, where there is also more detailed guidance, especially in relation to process.

Please read all relevant pages carefully before going to "Apply On-line".

Fellowship (FIPEM)
...is the most senior category of membership and is awarded to applicants who, in the opinion of the Institute's Council, have made an outstanding contribution in a relevant area.  Fellowship is open to those who have already attained Corporate or Incorporated Membership of the Institute and, exceptionally, for others who also meet the requirements for both Fellowship and Corporate or Incorporated Membership.

Corporate Membership (MIPEM)
...is the category of membership to which all those seeking recognition as professional scientists or engineers at the Chartered level should aspire.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate the acquisition of appropriate competencies, in breadth and depth, through a combination of postgraduate education, training and responsible experience.  Scientists may be awarded the Chartered Scientist (CSci) designation at the same time as MIPEM.  Engineers may have an application for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) considered concurrently with an application for Corporate Membership.  For those in the NHS who are undertaking pre-registration training in clinical science, assessment by ACS assesors for registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health Professions Council will be concurrent with assessment for Corporate Membership.

Incorporated Membership (IIPEM)
...is the category of membership to which all those seeking recognition as fully qualified medical physics or medical engineering technologists should aspire.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate the acquisition of appropriate competencies, through a combination of higher education, training and responsible experience, and those working in the NHS as clinical technologists should also be registered with the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technlogists, pending a decision by the Health Professions Council about it registering Clinical Technologists.  Applicants working in engineering technology should also consider submitting an application for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) concurrently with an application for Incorporated Membership.

Medical Fellowship (MedFIPEM)
...is a senior category of membership for those working as medical practitioners, rather than as clinical scientists or engineers, who have made an outstanding contribution to physics and engineering applied to medicine.

Medical Membership (MedMIPEM)

...is a category of membership for those working as medical practitioners, rather than as clinical scientists or engineers, who are working with applications of physics and engineering applied to medicine.

Associate Membership
... is for all those working in clinical science, engineering or technology, who are seeking to achieve the education, competencies and experience necessary to become Corporate or Incorporated Members, or for junior doctors with interests in the application of physics, engineering and technology to medicine, who have not yet gained full membership of a medical Royal college and are, therefore, not yet eligible for MedMIPEM .  It is also an appropriate membership category for technical staff who acquire competencies perhaps through National Vocational Qualifications, but who are unlikely to gain the qualifications for Incorporated Membership.  Associate Membership is a prerequisite for registration with the Engineering Council UK, through IPEM, as an Engineering Technologist (EngTech).

Student Membership
... is intended for all students, including postgraduate students who are not qualified for Associate Membership, that is, they are not in employment in clinical science, engineering or technology.

Overseas Affiliateship
...is a membership category specially designed for physicists, engineers and technologists whose work relates to healthcare, who are outside the United Kingdom and are members of a relevant national society or professional body in their own country.  UK Ex-patriates are ineligible for Overseas Affiliateship.

Affiliateship

...is intended for any other person with interests in medical physics or clinical engineering.

Company Membership
...is open to all companies who have an employee who is an IPEM member
more >>

Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists
...is open to all working in a technical role in the field of medical physics, clinical engineering, medical equipment maintenance or medical equipment manufacturing.  The Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists is NOT a category of IPEM membership and does not confer any of the benefits of membership. It is operated jointly by IPEM, the Association of Renal Technologists (ART) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).  All Clinical Technologists are encouraged to join VRCT but those also wishing to be members of IPEM should consider the categories of Associate and Incorporated Membership.
